Why should I be extra concerned with my oral health during pregnancy?

Good oral hygiene is extremely important during pregnancy because the increase of hormone levels is just one of the many changes that occur to your body during pregnancy, and it can cause dental problems to be intensified. One problem associated with pregnancy in the first trimester is a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis, which usually presents itself as bleeding, swollen, red and tender gums. Good oral health during pregnancy could also be important to your growing child. Some researchers have suggested that serious gum disease, known as periodontitis, could cause premature birth and low birth weight. Babies that are born premature, before 37 weeks of gestation, may face numerous health complications, and research indicates that women with periodontal disease are three to five times more likely to have a baby born preterm compared to women without any form of gum disease. Schedule an appointment at Bogey Hills Dental for an exam and cleaning to educate and protect yourself during your pregnancy.
