Frequently Asked Questions

Gum Disease

What are the risks of serious health complications caused by gum disease?

Recent studies suggest 75% of Americans suffer from some form of gum disease and it may contribute to or be warning signs of potentially life threatening conditions such as heart disease and stroke, diabetes, kidney disease, and pre-term birth. So it is important to have regular cleanings and to remember to brush and floss daily.

Oral Health and Pregnancy

Why should I be extra concerned with my oral health during pregnancy?

Good oral hygiene is extremely important during pregnancy because the increase of hormone levels is just one of the many changes that occur to your body during pregnancy, and it can cause dental problems to be intensified. One problem associated with pregnancy in the first trimester is a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis, which usually presents itself as bleeding, swollen, red and tender gums. Good oral health during pregnancy could also be important to your growing child. Some researchers have suggested that serious gum disease, known as periodontitis, could cause premature birth and low birth weight. Babies that are born premature, before 37 weeks of gestation, may face numerous health complications, and research indicates that women with periodontal disease are three to five times more likely to have a baby born preterm compared to women without any form of gum disease. Schedule an appointment at Bogey Hills Dental for an exam and cleaning to educate and protect yourself during your pregnancy.

Whitening Toothpastes

Do whitening toothpastes really “whiten” your teeth?

Whitening toothpastes, like all other toothpastes, contain mild abrasives to remove surface stains. Teeth whitening toothpastes may have additional polishing agents and special chemicals that are more effective against stains than regular toothpastes. While whitening toothpastes can make your teeth appear a little lighter, by getting rid of stains, they do not actually bleach your teeth.

Tooth Sensitivity

What causes tooth sensitivity and what can I do about it?

Tooth sensitivity is experiencing discomfort to your teeth from sweets, cold air, hot drinks or cold drinks. The porous inner part of the tooth is the region that registers pain, and it can allow the nerve inside the tooth to become sensitive. There are toothpastes available that insulate the nerve inside the tooth for moderate cases and there is also a fluoride gel available for more severe cases. If you have sensitive teeth, visit Bogey Hills Dental to discuss your symptoms. We can help determine the cause of your pain and develop a plan for relief.

Canker Sores

What are canker sores and what causes them?

Canker sores, also known as aphthous ulcers, are small lesions that appear on the inside of the mouth as round or oval sores typically with a red border and yellow or white center. Canker sores do not develop on the external surfaces of the lips and should not be confused with cold sores. The cause of canker sore development varies from person to person, with an exact cause unknown. It is recommended that you seek treatment from your dentist if you have a recurrent canker sore that does not heal after 14 days.  If you just want some relief, come in for a treatment to take away the pain.

Dentist Anxiety

I have high anxiety while in the dental chair. What options are out there to decrease my anxiety?

Nitrous Oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is the most commonly used anxiolytic. It is a gas that is combined with oxygen to produce a calming effect and allow you to relax when it is inhaled. When the dental procedure is over, the dentist will allow the patient to breathe 100% oxygen for a few minutes to eliminate the effects of the Nitrous Oxide. Unlike other types of sedation, the patient should have a clear head within minutes of coming off of the Nitrous Oxide allowing them to drive home without any lingering effects.

First Time Visits for Children

When should I take my child to the dentist for the first time?

According to the American Dental Association, children should visit a dentist when their first tooth erupts or no later than their first birthday. Bogey Hills Dental offers free dental wellness exams to all children under age 4, so schedule an appointment to bring your child in to see Dr. Pollard.

Changing Your Toothbrush

How often should I change out my toothbrush?

Everyone should change out their toothbrush at the minimum every 3 months because they become worn out and are not as effective as they need to be. Some electric toothbrushes have very good brush heads that only need to be changed every 6 months. If you are suffering from gum disease, you should change your toothbrush every 6 weeks because bacteria can linger in the bristles. You should always rinse your toothbrush out with hot water after every use and change it after you have been sick.

Dental Sealants

What are dental sealants and should my child get them?

Dental sealants are a protective coating that is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant protects the tooth from getting a cavity by preventing bacteria and plaque from attacking the pits and fissures of the teeth. Dental sealants are a great way to protect young children’s permanent teeth from cavities while they are still learning to properly brush and floss. Most insurance companies will pay for sealants on your child teeth, so ask the dentist about sealants at your child’s next appointment.
